Peeling Back the Onion on Point-of-Load Modules

In this article published by Electronic Design, Aaron Yarnell, CUI’s Field Applications Engineering Manager, looks beyond typical marketing specifications by delving into some of the key differences in point-of-load dc-dc converter performance and how they relate to your specific system design.

The article begins, “The endlessly creative art of marketing is a powerful tool that helps companies highlight their differentiations and advantages over industry competitors. However, do these supposed advantages make a difference in your particular application? Does it really matter if the product of interest is smaller, faster, stronger? As it turns out, like most things in life, the answer is ‘it depends.’”

Aaron Yarnell then goes into greater detail on key specifications such as: peak efficiency, ripple/transient performance, analog/digital compensation and cooling requirements.

He concludes, “Every application is different and values different performance metrics. For some, a fast transient response may be the most important consideration, while others may require the smallest size, highest efficiency, or widest operating-temperature range. No one POL can meet all of these requirements for each application, no matter what the marketing teams may tell you. It’s crucial to first understand your application’s needs under its specific operating conditions. Only then can you compare and select the optimal POL for your design.”
